Metropolitan Property Group is a team of over 200 agents working to buy, sell and rent the city's best apartments, co-ops and condos. We are one of the most aggressive brokerage houses in the city and are breaking company records year after year. Currently, we are expanding and looking for new talent. We are willing to train the right person, so prior experience is not required. Still in school? You can begin to train as you finish your coursework.

Below are some facts and questions about Metropolitan:

Why choose a career in real estate?

In this economically uncertain time, those looking to make the switch from their present career are beginning to wonder if it is worth the risk. Metropolitan's answer: It is!

A big misconception right now is that the real estate market is floundering. While this does prove true in the home buying market, the rental market, especially in New York City, has seen little change. We work in the greatest city on Earth and everyone wants to be a part of it. From college students and couples to entertainers and families, anyone can call New York City home. Our job is to make sure they find them the best possible space for their money.

What areas do you cover?

Metropolitan Property Group brokers residential and commercial deals throughout the city. Although we have done deals in other boroughs, our agents work predominantly in Manhattan.

Our commercial sector specializes in retail, office and industrial properties within Manhattan.

At this point in time we are looking for both residential and commercial agents. However, we prefer our agents work within one sector. There are no opportunities for agents to work in both areas at once.

What are you looking for in an agent?

Being a real estate agent requires great people skills, patience, determination, commitment and optimism. We are looking for genial, outgoing people who love the city and have a passion for helping people. You will meet all people from all walks of life so the ability to get along with just about everyone is important as well.

Lastly, a degree of flexibility is key. It is important to understand that there will be times when you are not making deals (usually at the beginning of your career). It is during these times that you need to work doubly hard by advertising, previewing buildings and making contacts; trust us, the deals will come.

What kind of money can I expect to make?

This is a very common question. The answer is not as simple as a dollar amount. Your income is proportional to how hard you work. Real estate, although glamorized at times, is a tough business. You have to be on the cutting edge of the industry, know the city inside and out, and be the first to get the client.

Real estate is a FULL-TIME job. You have to be available for your clients at any time of time. Agents at Metropolitan work full, five-day work weeks. In addition, many come in on weekends as well, although it is not required.

There is no "average" commission because there are no "average" clients. Each one has a specific set of needs. These can range from school district to proximity to work and transportation. Accommodating these requirements within the preset budget is what being an agent is all about.

Rent prices in New York City can range from $900 to over $26,000 and the agents at Metropolitan have rented apartments at both ends of the spectrum.

When it comes time for you to get paid, Metropolitan is extremely fair. We offer 50-50 commission splits, in conjunction with a bonus program to help you make the most money possible.

Take me through my first day at Metropolitan

On your first day as an agent, you will be paired with your trainer. This is usually one of our senior agents who has been with our company for some time and have proven to be successful year-round. Whether you are new to the real estate industry or a seasoned professional, we pair all newcomers with a mentor. Because every company is different, we like to introduce all new agents to Metropolitan by giving them this invaluable resource. Your trainer is a person of whom a new agent can ask questions, get advice, and receive help when they have a client.

Also on your first day, you will be previewing apartments. This is done so a new agent can get familiar with different parts of the city, get to know layouts of different buildings and get a feel for the size of an apartment at a given location. You will take pictures, speak to the management, and take down details about availabilities. When you return to the office, you will begin to advertise these listings. Your trainer will show you how to do this and give you a tutorial about our advertising processes.

Finally, at the end of your first day, you will receive formal, one-on-one training from our manager on OnLine Residential and RealtyMX. These are two resources that we use to gather listings for our clients. Should you need additional help after this session, one of our administrators or your trainer will always be available to help.

How long is the training program?

The training program is on going for the length of your career at Metropolitan Property Group. The market and industry is always changing and our trainers are constantly being brought up to speed to help you. Everything you learn on your first day at Metropolitan Property Group will be continued throughout your time here. The first few weeks are filled with previewing, advertising and one-on-one meetings with your trainer to prepare you for a long career in Real Estate.

What fees can I expect to incur as an agent?

As a Metropolitan agent, you will be provided with your own computer, desk and chair, phone, and email account. For this you pay NOTHING! We do not charge telephone or desk fees - ever.

We believe every agent should have his/her own personal workspace and that is what we provide.

The only charge you will find at Metropolitan is through our partnership with Craigslist. For each listing you post, you will be charged a small fee. There is no limit to the amount you can post. We have had agents post hundreds and other post none - and each have closed numerous deals. Craigslist is a tool we provide our agents to market themselves in the beginning - to get their name and the company notice. Once the acclimation period is over, you will most likely find yourself using less. In fact, a large percentage of our agents work on a referral-only basis.
